Opened
in the full flower of the memorable Belle Époque period,
the Plaza Athénée has been regarded as one of the
most glamorous of Parisian palace hotels by renowned guests worldwide.
Those
Americans with a desire to remain socially in evidence had to be
seen annually on both sides of the Atlantic, especially in Paris.
The guest list of the Plaza Athénée included such
famous names as Rockefellers and Vanderbilts.
It
is here, in this dazzling ivy-walled courtyard, that King unfolds
his artistry and recreates a timeless moment from the past in this
radiant work. The distinctive earthen Venetian red awnings and patio
umbrellas are reminiscent of 17th century pigments, and as they
flow onto the canvas under King's mastery, they festoon and frame
a lovely and charming afternoon of an elegant era. |
