| As
a young lad, the first drawing Mark King did was of a magnificent
old oak tree in England. That solidified his desire to become an
artist, and now he renders anew these splendid trees in his California
Collection of works.
One
can imagine wanting to stroll beyond the towering live coastal oak
and visit the charming hacienda beyond. There are many of these
exemplary native oaks growing naturally throughout the grounds and
a few were moved during the construction period as early as 1925;
to make room for the north and south wings of the castle.
The
hacienda, built for overflow guests, is emblematic of classical
Mission architecture; close to San Simeon and beautifully placed
in a landscape resplendent with the majestic sculptural effects
of these aged, asymmetric Oaks. King's mastery of his media, and
his innate awe of his subject, provides his signature radiance that
imbue his paintings so that, momentarily, one catches one's breath
and then pauses in reflection. |
