This exquisite Villa
is situated in an equally exquisite setting surrounded by a lush
countryside featuring a panorama of Naples with Capri seen in
the distance. The name of this Villa derives from Donna Lucia,
daughter of the Duke of Floridia and wife to Ferdinand IV of the
Two Sicilies. The date of their marriage, November 27, 1834, is
commemorated by a sundial on the façade of the Villa.
La
Floridiana is a charming and romantic park designed entirely on
the English Garden system, which is characterized by a complete
lack of symmetry, with paths ambling amidst picturesque scenery.
With its beautifully maintained walks and magnificent views, La
Floridiana offers the people of Naples a delightful respite. It
is one the city's most frequented and beloved parks.
Antonio Niccolini was entrusted
by Ferdinand IV with the construction of the Villa, and also build
the circular temple overlooking the gulf painted here. The aged
bougainvillæa becomes a sculpture niche, and its fallen
petals strew the mossy pathway offering an enchanting place to
pause and reflect.
Once again, Mark King,
in this dazzling work, unfolds his artistry for the lovers of
beauty, radiance and balance, and demonstrates anew his genius
in portraying the lyric aspects of nature.
